Slow Food Swan Valley And Eastern Regions Inc

Slow Food International is a global, not-for-profit, grassroots organisation founded in Italy in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, and to encourage people’s interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, and how our food choices affect the world around us.

Based in the Swan Valley, Slow Food Swan Valley and Eastern Regions is the only Convivium in Western Australia. Our members are passionate about sharing the Slow Food philosophy of GOOD, CLEAN and FAIR food and in being connected to a sustainable, bio-diverse food community.

We hold various events throughout the year to create awareness about the WA food system, its opportunities and complexities. Together we share knowledge and techniques so that everyone can become aware of their food choices in relation to local production, seasonality and the socio-economic impact that everyone’s decision has on our community. Nowadays the food industry is purely driven by economic and profit based decisions. The industrialisation and globalisation of food production has created the idea that food is a commodity and is no longer seasonal, meaning that it no longer holds the social values which were once associated with it. The real challenge is raising awareness and sensitising consumers to make responsible decisions, not only for their community but first and foremost for their own well-being and that of future generations.

We also aim at empowering Indigenous communities to preserve and promote their food heritage as we believe that Indigenous people have a strong connection with the land and they possess the knowledge of how to manage it to defend the environment and mitigate climate change.

We actively support other organizations that share the same ethos of Slow Food as we believe that together we can make a change in the food system in Australia and around the world.
